Did you know libraries can offer more than just books and DVD’s? Chester Public Library is adding to its collection with our Library of Things, a collection of equipment and supplies for patrons to borrow at no cost!
What types of items are you interested in borrowing, we want to hear. Please send your requests to librarydirector@chesterct.org, we also welcome donations.
T Mobile Hotspot – The Hotspot is an easy-to-use device that allows you to connect to your tablet, laptop, or other mobile device to the Internet wherever you are – at home, a road trip, an outing of some sort, etc. The Hotspot is for residents who are in good standing with the library (no overdue books or fines.) You must be 18+ of age to check out the device. You cannot reserve this online, please call the library for availability. Click here to download Hotspot agreement.
Talking Books
The Connecticut Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped lends recorded books and magazines along with the necessary playback equipment, free of charge, to any Connecticut adult or child unable to read regular print due to a visual or physical disability. Materials in Braille are also available. The disability can be either short-term or permanent. All materials are mailed to and from library patrons by postage-free mail. An application for service must be completed and signed by an appropriate certifying authority. Chester Library has applications and a sample talking book player to loan, or you can call 860-721-2020 or 1-800-842-4516 to request an application or program information. An application can also be downloaded from the CT Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped website.
Kill A Watt Kit – Have you ever wondered how much electrical use your appliances are actually using? Eversource has provided a Kill A Watt kit that can be checked out to measure just that. The kit allows you to measure the electrical use of household appliances to determine how they currently use energy and therefore providing you with the tools to reduce energy consumption and electrical costs.
Thank you to the Janvrin Fund at the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, they have graciously donated a Birding Backpack! Equipped with binoculars, compass, magnifying glass, books and maps plus a bug catcher for little birders, this backpack has all the essentials for your next expedition. Come check it out!
We have some basic gardening tools to help you begin your beds or planters.
A variety of games and RPG’s are available for check-out, the library welcomes donations of additional games in good condition.
What better way to beat the winter blues than by working on a puzzle. We only have a few but hope to grow this collection as well.
Gaze at the stars with the library’s Orion Starblast II 4.5 EQ. The telescope can be checked out for 1 week and comes with an observer’s guide, a moon map and deep-sky road map as well as a star target constellation and celestial object finder.
There’s a variety of outdoor games for the whole family; corn hole, jumbo connect four, jumbo rackets for tennis or badminton and tabletop Jenga!
The library has added Stay Sharp kits to our collection! These kits are designed for those experiencing memory loss or other cognitive issues related to Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other memory disorders.
Small Town America: Learn about the small farm towns of America in Penworthy’s Small Town America Kit. Enjoy the classic games of checkers, dominoes, and monopoly all with a farm theme. Lastly, let your mind relax as you work through a tactor themed puzzle.
Let’s Go To the Movies: Ready, Set, Action…Penworthy’s Let’s go to the Movies Kit is meant for movie fanatics. Get ready for a high-stakes game of James Bond Bingo or an auction-themed Hollywood game of John Wanye-Opoly. Don’t forget to test your movie knowledge with a movie trivia game. Lastly, challenge your memory skills with a Wizard of Oz matching game.
